She met the lace-makers in 2010 while visiting the Sri Lanka Design Festival with Caren Downie, the fashion director of Asos, whom she has known since she started in fashion in the late 1990s. When they found out the price points - starting at £60 for a jersey T-shirt, with the most expensive piece a £495 lace dress - and that they would be able to order it online from Asos, they were even more excited: clothes that are unmistakably... Sophia Kokosalaki, a fashion designer working in London, is Greek, and so she is well aware of the difficulties facing the fashion industry, not to mention the wider world economy. When she launched it at Paris Fashion Week last October, fashion editors didn't only want to photograph it and write about it, they wanted to order it then and there. And to make the package complete, the collection is made with a social and ethical conscience: the lace trims and panels on the dresses and tops are handmade by a co-operative women's workshop in Sri Lanka.
